Installation Guide: Garage Flooring Tiles
Tylex DesignsShare
Summary
- Skill level: Easy–Moderate (DIY friendly)
- Typical duration:
Single garage (≈18 m²): 2–3.5 hours
Double garage (≈36 m²): 4–6 hours
- Tile size: ~40 × 40 × 1.8 cm → 6.25 tiles per m²
- Surface options: Vented (drainage), Solid/3D (continuous look)
- Expansion gap: leave 5–10 mm at all fixed edges (walls, posts)
Tools & Materials
- Rubber mallet, tape measure, pencil/marker
- Straightedge, square, utility knife for small trims
- Fine-tooth circular saw or jigsaw for cuts (cut from underside)
- Safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection
- Broom/vacuum (leaf blower optional)
- Tiles (add 5–10% overage for cuts/patterns), edges & ramps, spare pack
Step 1: Prepare the Garage
-
Clear & clean: remove vehicles/shelves as needed; sweep and vacuum.
-
Check the slab: fill large holes; small hairline cracks are fine (tiles bridge them).
- Door clearance: confirm the added height (tile + ramp) clears garage doors and thresholds.
Step 2: Plan the Layout
- Decide surface type by zone: vented where water/snow enters; solid/3D for dry work and showrooms.
- Sketch colors/patterns and borders.
- Choose a reference corner (squarest corner) and plan to work outward.
Step 3: Dry-Fit a Core
- Snap a 3 × 3 m core in the center. Confirm orientation, color order, and interlock direction.
- Adjust the pattern so you avoid thin slivers at edges.
Step 4: Install the Field
- Start from your reference corner and snap tiles row by row.
- Keep the interlock direction consistent (male to female).
- Tap joins with a rubber mallet until seams are tight.
- Work around columns or drains, leaving your expansion gap at walls.
Step 5: Cutting Around Obstacles
- Mark cuts with a square; cut from the underside with a fine-tooth blade.
- For curves (posts/drains), make a cardboard template first.
- Deburr edges lightly with a utility knife.
Step 6: Edges & Ramps (Finishing)
- Install edge trims and ramps at doorways and any exposed perimeters.
- Check transitions for trip-free movement and smooth drive-in.
- Confirm your 5–10 mm wall gap is preserved.
Step 7: Final Checks & Cleanup
- Walk the floor—listen for loose interlocks; tap where needed.
- Vacuum/blow channels (vented tiles) and mop solid tiles.
Pro Tips
- Mix boxes as you go to blend color lots.
- Use neutral solid tiles in inspection/photo zones (reduces color cast).
- Label underside of removed tiles by zone for future swaps.
- For floor jacks, use a jack pad to spread point loads. (recommended for Lite Vented Tiles)
Maintenance
-
Vented: blow or vacuum debris from channels.
-
Solid: mop with neutral cleaner; avoid harsh abrasives.
-
Inspect ramps/edges seasonally and re-seat if needed.
FAQs
Do I need glue or underlayment? No—tiles float and lock together.
Can I install over epoxy or paint? Yes, if fully cured and sound.
Can I jack a car on tiles? Yes—use a pad under jack/stands to spread load. (Recommended for Lite Vented Tiles)
What if the floor is not perfectly level? Tiles bridge small dips; level major steps first.
